Bath
An easy way to use
essential oils is to add 4 to 8 drops to a bath. It’s important not to
have your bath too hot as the oil will just evaporate and you will feel
drained. Diluting the oils in non-perfumed bath oil is probably the way
to get the best result. This is especially good for overtired muscles
and is a wonderful way to relax after a hard day. Choose any of the
relaxing oils such as Lavender, Ylang Ylang or Sweet Marjoram being
careful not to exceed 8 drops altogether.
Be careful when using citrus oils as they can be irritating to
sensitive skins and no more than 3 drops should be used.
Footbath
A footbath has many
of the benefits of a full bath whilst saving time and water. This is
also great for treating tired hands and arms. If using a footbath 3
drops of essential oil is sufficient.
Massage
With massage, the
oils are passed through the skin into the blood stream and the
therapeutic actions of the oil and the massage combine together and
enhance each other’s effectiveness.
To make a massage oil add 8-10 drops of essential oil to 20mls of a
carrier oil such as sunflower, sweet almond or grapeseed oil. Use less
essential oil if you have sensitive skin. You can use just one
essential oil or up to four essential oils in any one blend again
insuring that you use 8-10 drops for every 20mls of carrier oil.
Inhalation
Steam inhalation
has been used for centuries to help respiratory problems and is a very
effective way to get essential oils into your system. Pour 3-4 drops of
a single oil or your mixed blend into a bowl of steaming hot water and
inhale deeply and slowly. A towel can be placed over your head to
direct the steam. Take care you don’t lean against the bowl and flip
it. This method should not be used by asthmatics.
For instant relief of colds, asthma or hay fever oils can also be
inhaled by placing 3-4 drops of oil on a tissue and inhaling gently.
Compression
In a basin of
water, sprinkle in 4-6 drops of oil, dip a cloth in the water and
squeeze out and apply to the area. Compresses may be used Hot for
arthritic/rheumatic, period pain or Cold for headaches, sprains etc.
Vaporisation
Using an oil burner
with a tea-light can vaporise a few drops of essential oils creating a
soothing atmosphere for relaxation or meditation.
Air Freshners
Half fill a water
sprayer with cold water add 20 drops of essential oils, shake well
before each use - can kill airborne bacteria and help prevent infection.
