Essential Oils are pure plant extracts distilled from herbs, flowers, leaves, woods and resins. The therapeutic powers are concentrated in the oils and are useful in treating main conditions.
HOW TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS
Baths
An easy way to use the oils is to add 4 to 8 drops to a bath. Don’t have your bath too hot as the oil will just evaporate and the bath will just drain you. Diluting the oils in non-perfumed bath oil is probably the best way to get the best result. This is especially good for overtired muscles.
Footbaths
A footbath has many of the benefits of a full bath whilst saving time and water. This is also great for treating tired hands and arms.
Massage
With massage, the oils are passed through the skin into the blood stream and the therapeutic actions of the oil and the massage combine together and enhance each other’s effectiveness.
To make a massage oil, add 8 drops of essential oil to 20mls of a carrier oil such as sunflower, sweet almond or grapeseed oil.
Inhalations
Pour 5 to 10 drops of oil into a bowl of steaming hot water and inhale. Oils can also be inhaled by placing a couple of drops on a tissue.
Compresses
In a basin of water, sprinkle in 4 drops of oil, dip a cloth in the water and squeeze out and apply to the area. Compresses may be used hot for arthritic/rheumatic pain or cold for headaches, sprains, etc.
Vapourisation
Using an oil burner with a night-light can vaporise a few drops of essential oils.
Air Freshner
Half fill a water sprayer with cold water add 20-30 drops of essential oils, shake well before each use.
CAUTION
- Oils should not be taken internally or, in most cases, applied undiluted to the skin.
- Oils are flammable and should be kept out of reach of children.
- Essential oils are highly concentrated and dosages should be strictly adhered to.
- The use of essential oils should be avoided during pregnancy unless under the supervision of a qualified Therapist.
- If you have sensitive skin, dilute essential oils in vegetable oil when using in the bath.
- Citrus oils such as Lemon or Bergamot should not be used before exposure to the sun as a skin reaction could occur.
- Seek advice before you use essential oils on young children or babies.
